Sports are competitive games.
So ANY game that have competitions in which players compete to see who's better is a sport. This includes chess, poker, as well as video games.

My first reaction to this forum is "of course not"! Now that I`ve read it, I have`nt changed my mind, but I`ve changed the reason why I think it .
I believe that Fishing and Nascar, and gaming should`nt be considered sports. Maybe they should be in a different category, since they are competitive and do require skill.

i dont think so
lots of things are hard and require time and skill but that doesnt make them a sport(nascar, fencing, track and so on)

Track and Field and Fencing most certainly ARE sports, I don't know where you got the notion that they aren't.

Track is most definitely a sport. It requires some of the most basic things that most sports have- running, speed, endurance and strength. I could see why you name fishing and Nascar... but certainly not track.

So, umm, hockey isn't a sport? No ball involved in that, just a puck.
As for fishing not being a sport, I agree. For NASCAR, I still disagree, as much as I hate NASCAR I respect the guys for what they put their bodies through. Go read the article I linked too on the first page and you will understand.

school is competitive....
this could go on forever...
pwnd puck=ball
as for nascar i just cant see how any1 could call driving cars a sport....makes 0 sense imo. the drivers may go thru hell but that does not make it a sport in any way shape or form

school is not competative under normal circumstances. some ppl make it competative by trying to be better than everyone else but school is there so that you can learn things.

So people who do not have an optical/laser mouse, and instead have one with a ball inside ARE playing a sport?
I guess you could call Lightning Orb a ball of sorts... "Orb" kinda suggests "Ball"...?

please explain "normal circumstances". As you progress through school each level becomes more and more competative. (feel free to pm it to me, enough spam on the thread )
back on topic i would say getting paid to play a game is more of a job (an amazing job )

Pro gaming is a job not a sport. Classing gaming as a sport is showing how truly f*cked up our world is coming.
Believe me gaming will never be reconised as an offical sport. Just look at all the bad press gaming gets.
"Teenage murderer blames the GTA series for his crimes" and so on.

I'd say that if you can sit down and eat during the actual activity, it's not a sport. Otherwise we'd have people riding their Video Game scholarships into college...

Activities that are considered a sport in popular culture.
Chess
Nascar and Formula 1 Racing
Competitive Eating (I went and checked this one especially for reks )
Table sports (Billiards, Bar billiards, snooker, pool etc)
Frisbee
The list goes on and on. I think there is a good chance that Gaming will be recognised as a sport in the near future, more likely in the high end fps type of game.

There are plenty of sports which have minimal physical activity involved e.g. shooting (aim and shoot.. wow, tough), pool/snooker (lugging that cue around is really tiring I guess), chess as mentioned before.. got to be superman to move those pieces around I guess... then you have things like greyhound racing/snail racing and whatever probably in some parts of the world where the humans don't even directly take part (other things do) but it's still called a sport
What are most sports but games at the end of the day? If a sport is simulated on computer/console does it suddenly cease to be a sport? Sooner or later gaming (I think pro gaming in this regard, competitive etc.) will be recognised as some kind of sport...
